What is overmolding?

It is a plastic injection molding process that combines multiple plastic materials. The mold for overmolding is made from hardened steel to withstand the pressure and heat of the overmolding process. Overmolding mold is unique compared to insert molding and injection molding mold. The overmolding process is used for high and medium-volume production

Overmolding is used for several purposes, such as:

   • Improving the grip of a component
   • Prevent vibration
   • Add sealing

What are the advantages of overmolding?

Overmolding offers many advantages:

• A rigid connection: The injected plastic englobes the insert, which results in a rigid connection between materials
• Accuracy: Overmolding offers tight tolerances, around ±0.05mm.
• More rigid threads: The inserts are added to a plastic part to avoid wearing of threads in plastic material.
• No need for fasteners: There is no need for post-molding operations as the molded parts come off the mold and can have a mirror glass surface, mat color, or texture.
• Low production costs: The production cost is reduced since post-machining operations are reduced or eliminated.

But there are some disadvantages as well:

   - Longer cycle time
   - Higher cost

How is it fabricated?

There are two types of overmolding:

I. Two Shots overmolding:

1. Plastification:
The plastic granules are transferred from the hopper to the mold using a rotating screw and molted using heaters.

2. First shot: The screw will advance to increase pressure in the injection chamber to inject the molted plastic into the mold. The two cavities are maintained close until the plastic solidifies

3. Die rotation: After injecting the 1stshot, the Die is opened and rotates until the injected part meets the 2ndshot cavity.

4. Second shot: The mold is closed again, and 2ndmaterial is injected into the mold.

5. Ejection: After the molted plastic solidifies using a cooling circuit, the Die is opened, and the part is ejected via ejector pins.

II. Co-injection molding (2k/3k injection mol):

1. Plastification:
The plastic granules are transferred from both hoppers to the mold using a rotating screw and molted using heaters.

2. First material injection: The first material is injected after closing the mold.

3. Second material injection:The second material is injected without opening the mold.

4. Ejection: After the molted plastic solidifies using a cooling circuit, the Die is opened, and the part is ejected via ejector pins. The screws will retreat to prepare for the next injection.

Two Shots overmolding

Obtaining a fully functional part might require extra processing for features that can’t be made with the overmolding process, such as taping. The designed part should follow Overmolding and overmolding design guidelines.
